The FIGA, originally an Italian
amulet, called Mano Fico, was also used by the Etruscans in the Roman era.
Mano means hand and Fico or Figa is the representation of the female genitals, especially
the Clitoris, and was associated with fertility and eroticism. In Italy, this
sign, known as "fica" or "far le fiche," by the resemblance
to the Clitoris, was a common and very crude gesture in past centuries, similar
to the middle finger. In Turkey this sign, known like "nah", is a
well-known and highly offensive gesture. In English-speaking countries, as
in the United States, it is a child's play in which it is simulated to
pluck the nose of a child from his face.In Brazil, this sign symbolizes
the wishes of good luck. Today it is used as amulet against evil eye in
the belief that obscene distracts evil. Once you are given a figa it
stores up all the luck you haven’t used, but be careful not to break or
lose it as that will cut off your supply of luck. Remember: the figa should only
be received as a gift.
